Other Information

Green Cup Challenge

The 2010 Green Cup Challenge begins Monday, January 25 and lasts until February 22. As you may remember from last year, the Green Cup Challenge is a student-driven, interschool energy competition that will have us competing against more than 122 schools across the United States, and six within our region of Utah and Colorado. During this time we will try and reduce our use of electricity, with a goal of a 5% further reduction over 2008-2009 numbers. (Last year we decreased our usage by nearly 20%, resulting in a $1,400 savings for the 29 day period of the competition.) We have our records for the past three years to measure our progress, and we will have scoreboards in public spaces of each campus to mark our weekly consumption.
There are many things each of us can do to reduce electricity use:

  • Turn off your light and let the sun light your room. Please ask yourselves..."Will natural light suffice?"
  • Put electronics on a surge protector that you can switch off. This prevents phantom electricity from electrifying appliances that are not in use.
  • Set your computer to energy efficient settings. If your computer is not on a timer, please turn it off at night.
  • Use electronic devices efficiently...unplug them when they are not in use.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions. I will keep you updated on our progress throughout the competition. Mary Jacquin, Sustainability Consultant

Sustainability Reminder

It's that time of year again when poor air quality caused by inversions becomes a health concern for many of us, especially our children. 50% of air pollution in Utah comes from car emissions, so we can all make a difference by not idling our cars. Please remember the school's Curb Your Carbon policy: when on school grounds please do not idle your vehicles.

Donate Unused Paper

If you have unused paper at your home or work place, we are eager to reuse it in our classrooms. Teachers are very creative reusing paper that might otherwise be recycled or discarded, i.e. discontinued letterhead, outdated forms, etc. Thank you for thinking of us.
