Healthy and Sustainable Choices

Working in the Science GardenThe Rowland Hall cafeterias seek to provide nutritious, appetizing, and sustainably produced meals that encourage healthy eating habits and help children understand the connection between healthy food, a healthy body and a healthy environment.

Rowland Hall is exploring ways for its cafeteria to become a model for environmentally sound agricultural practices and waste management. The school has formed a cafeteria committee to review food and sustainability at Rowland Hall and compare the school nationally and locally to other schools. The committee has surveyed parents to determine their food values and the importance of food, nutrition and sustainability to their children’s’ education. In the coming months they will provide a report of their findings to the school.

Home-grown vegetables are utilized in the school cafeteria from the McCarthey Campus science gardens when available. From a very young age, students learn principals such as composting, growing healthy food, and caring for the earth.
