Member of Green Schools Alliance

As a charter member of the Green Schools Alliance, Rowland Hall has pledged to address climate change and environmental stewardship. In collaboration with Environmental Performance Group, local environmental consultants, Rowland Hall has completed a carbon footprint and established a system for tracking energy, waste and water use at the school. The carbon footprint revealed that energy (electricity and natural gas) comprise 44% of the school’s footprint. Food waste from the cafeteria contributes 25% and transportation (commuting and athletics) accounts for 29%.

Rowland Hall Carbon Footprint

Rowland Hall is striving to lower its energy consumption by investing in efficiency measures, energy conservation, and renewable energy. The school hopes to reduce its electrical use 15% below 2007-2008 levels and its natural gas consumption 10% below 2007-2008 levels by 2013 and will report on its energy use yearly.

This winter, RH will join over 100 schools to participate in the Green Cup Challenge, a national competition. During one month, schools challenge themselves and one another to conserve electricity, become more conscious of waste, and develop new habits that conserve energy.
