Liz Baer races to a 4th place finish at the Snowbird South Series race January 30th 2010.
Rowmark Middle & Lower School ski teams brought in the 2010 ski season with
fast skiing and a slew of good finishes. With 11 Middle school skiers and 15 Lower school racers, Rowmark's Junior Program has one of the strongest teams in years. Fortunately, a few sparse but well-timed storms have also provided both teams a number of enjoyable powder days at Snowbird.
The racing season kicked off on January 9th and 10th at Snowbasin for a pair of South Series Giant Slalom (GS). These opening races boasted a strong field of fast skiers and the Rowmark skiers held their own, with improved skiing across the board and even some medal winners. Many of the Middle & Lower school skiers had competitive runs, but not everyone was fortunate enough to get two fast runs down to the finish line.
On Saturday in the J5 class for boys, Matthew Orford finished just outside
the top ten in 11th; Louis Fisher was two places behind in 13th; William
Riedel was 21st; Steven Pasinsky was 24th, Alex Perrin 25th; William Stone
29th; Christopher Ausbeck 33rd; and Max Scaife 35th. In the J4 class, Tanner Riedel was 5th; Matthew Glasgow was 8th; Gray Larsen 11th; and Jack Shipman 17th. Unfortunately, Jack Scaife did not finish after having a good first run. For the J5 girls, Sommer Glasgow finished 2nd and Gillian Larsen placed 16th, while for the J4 girls Liz Baer took home 4th place and Claire Ausbeck finished in 14th place. Sunday's results were even better for the team with Jack O'Neal finishing in 5th place, Matthew Orford in 6th, William Riedel in 8th, Steven Pasinsky 14th, Alex Perrin 15th and William Stone 17th for the J5 boys. In the older age class, J4's, Tanner Riedel finished 4th, Gray Larsen was 9th, Max Fisher 15th, Jack Shipman 21st, Kian Stevenson 36th and Theo Graham was 38th. On the girls side, Sommer Glasgow finished 3rd for the J5s and Liz Baer skied into 5th place and Claire Ausbeck 16th place for the J4s.
Two weekends later on the 29th & 30th of January, Rowmark headed to Snowbird for a weekend of Slalom (SL) racing. For many Lower school skiers this was their first opportunity to compete in a SL format competition. Nonetheless, many first time SL racers on the Rowmark team skied to top finishes. The Lower school team raced two runs down a SL course of stubby gates and the Middle school team competed on full size SL gates.
In Saturday's race for the J4 boys, Gray Larsen had the top finish in 6th,
Tanner Riedel was 13th, Jack Scaife 42nd and Jack Shipman was 45th. In the
J4 girls race Claire Ausbeck was 22nd and in the J5 girls Gillian Larsen was 8th. Both J5s - Sommer Glasgow and Sarv Raafati failed to finish both runs. In the J5 boys, Matthew Orford finished 8th, William Riedel placed 11th, Steven Pasinsky was 12th, Alex Perrin 15th, Christopher Ausbeck 16th, Max Scaife 17th and Maxwell Jacquin was 22nd. On Sunday, Rowmark skiers raised their level of skiing with a number of top finishers in the J4 boys
including Tanner Riedel in 3rd, Matthew Glasgow in 4th, Max Fisher in 6th,
Gray Larsen in 11th, Jack Shipman in 35th, Theo Graham in 44th and Kian
Stevenson in 58th. For the J5 boys, Matthew Orford placed 10th, Louis Fisher was 13th, Jack O'Neal 14th, Steven Pasinsky 20th and William Riedel 21st. On the girl’s side - Liz Baer placed 4th and Claire Ausbeck 34th for the J4s, while Sommer Glasgow finished 14th for the J5s.
At the Lower school level, a few racers still cross over and ski both South Series and YSL races. At Park City and at Brighton YSL races, Alex Perrin skied to a 10th place both weekends. At Brighton in the YSL GS, Steven Pasinsky finished 6th and Will Riedel 2nd.
Next week Rowmark racers compete in Park City at the South Series Finals.
The race format will include a SL, GS and Kombi events over three days. Top
finishers from Park City combined with results from the last two South
Series competitions will be eligible to compete in the Intermountain
Championships on March 19 - 21 in Jackson Hole, WY. Let's wish all the Rowmark Junior skiers continued improvement and good fortune, while hoping for more snow.
