Biography:

Joel has been teaching creative writing and English since August 2004. He received his BA and MA in English from the University of Northern Colorado and his MFA in poetry from the University of Utah. Joel has published several books:

  • Lessons in Disappearance (2012)
  • Knowing Time By Light (2010, with a new collection in fall 2012)
  • Winged Insects (1999), winner of the White Pine Press Poetry Prize
  • Chopin’s Preludes (2005)

In 2001, Joel received the Educator of Excellence Award, and in 2009 he received both the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Award for Literary Arts and the Writers Advocate Award from Writers@Work. Joel is the president of the City Art reading series and the founder and president of the Lake Effect Writers’ Conference. He raised two daughters who now live in Los Angeles.
