Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Rowland Hall recognizes the importance of embracing AI's complexity and potential. We are committed to helping students understand that while these tools are not always effective in fostering the development of their own knowledge, using AI ethically, safely, and skillfully will prepare our students to tackle tough questions and problems in school and beyond.
The fact that Artificial Intelligence tools are independently capable of generating content impacts the learning process and our understanding of academic integrity. As the distinction between human-authored work and work produced by a machine is increasingly blurred, AI presents profound challenges to educators, families, and students alike. AI is also a powerful tool that presents exciting opportunities for students and teachers.
Rowland Hall believes…
- AI should empower students to think deeply and critically. AI can be a resource that supports the development of essential skills, enabling students to ask questions, take risks, and solve challenging, real-world problems.
- AI is a means to achieve our goal of lifetime learning. It can equip students with the understanding, perspective, and confidence to thrive in a dynamic world.
- AI can serve to promote equitable access across cultural and learning differences. Teachers and students are encouraged to explore AI's potential to adapt instruction to individual students, ensuring that each student's journey is unique and meaningful.
- AI usage must be transparent. Teachers must guide students about when to use AI and how to cite it appropriately and also be candid about their own use of these technologies.
- It is important to prioritize personal and community well-being by maintaining a balance between technology use and physical/mental health and relationships.
Rowland Hall is committed to…
- Engaging all stakeholders in devising effective strategies to incorporate AI into our daily practices while welcoming input from teachers, students, and families.
- Pursuing a comprehensive approach to AI that involves research and insights from other institutions, professional development initiatives, and interdisciplinary dialogue.
- Continuously evaluating and improving AI applications to achieve learning goals and adjusting implementation strategies as needed to optimize student outcomes.
- Providing training and support for our teachers and students in new and existing AI technologies.
- Protecting data privacy and confidentiality while exploring these new technologies.
