Middle School Course Description

  • Grade 8
Advanced Flight School - TOP GUN
Extension Course | Open to eighth-grade students only

This class is tailored for the student who has a "true" interest in the field of aviation. This course will focus on the procedures and knowledge that aviation professionals routinely use to operate private and commercial aircraft. Students will look at life in the cockpit, being introduced to flight planning to include weather briefing, mission pre-brief, weight and balance calculations, and building and filing an actual aircraft flight plan. Students will complete an aviation-themed environmental sustainability project, and an aviation-themed Podcast project during this class. Students will also have access to our Rowland Hall flight simulator systems running X-Plane 11 software. Using approved Cornerstone Aviation aircraft checklists and standardization procedures, students will receive five simulator familiarization sorties focused on preparing students for an actual flight event. The class concludes with a capstone activity of an actual flight in a training aircraft with Cornerstone Aviation certified flight instructors. Finally, students will take part in several aviation-centric field trips over the course of the term, including Rockwell Collins aviation simulation center and Cornerstone Aviation Operations Center. Again, this elective is intended for the serious aviation flight candidate. Additionally, students will need to take the Primary Flight School elective prior to enrollment in this offering.
