Media Arts

Driving creativity through digital tools and storytelling, the media arts are a vital part of visual communication and an essential skill for today’s students.

Rowland Hall’s leading-edge curriculum begins with foundational concepts that build digital literacy and visual fluency. Students move from basic elements to advanced studio practice, learning to analyze work and create content for a modern audience.

Filmmaking

Filmmaking at Rowland Hall introduces students to video storytelling under the guidance of an award-winning filmmaker.

In the Middle School, videography courses focus on real-time documentation of events. Students analyze movie clips, learn technical skills, and develop scripts and storyboards for their own short pieces and satirical news segments, building a deeper understanding of how media is created.

In the Upper School, filmmaking becomes a deeper artistic pursuit, immersing students in the full production process, from concept development to final edits, while refining advanced skills in cinematography, composition, lighting, and ethical storytelling. The result is a rich pathway that helps students create thoughtful, compelling narratives for authentic audiences.

Photography

With a camera in every pocket, photography is more accessible than ever, giving students a powerful way to notice and communicate what they see.

In the Middle School, a study of photography turns everyday picture-taking into a thoughtful practice of observation and visual storytelling. Students learn to master mobile devices and digital cameras, focusing on techniques that improve images, like lighting, and exploring editing apps with the goal of producing high-quality, artistic images they’re excited to share.

Audio Production

Audio production gives students a modern platform for sound design and storytelling. Beginning in the Middle School, students explore digital music through songwriting and composition using tools like GarageBand, while also gaining an introduction to podcasting as they develop concepts, record, and edit narrative-driven audio.

In the Upper School, students move into professional-level production with Ableton Live and the Push controller, mastering beats, melodies, layered harmonies, and advanced editing techniques. Across both music and spoken-word formats, students refine technical skills while developing a confident creative voice for real audiences.

Publications

Rowland Hall’s publications curriculum offers extensive, high-impact experiences in professional media production.

Middle School students plan, design, and create the 60-page yearbook, applying photo techniques, layout, writing, and editing skills. Upper School students can join the staff of our online school newspaper, The Gazette, as well as learn from a published poet as they create our nationally recognized literary magazine, Tesserae. These student-led classes foster journalism, design, photography, and leadership, culminating in influential, public-facing documents.
