In the USA Ultimate official rulebook, the first section immediately after the introduction is on the “Spirit of the Game.” It says: “Spirit of the Game is a set of principles which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed-upon rules, or the basic joy of play.” This focus on spirit is one of the things that makes Ultimate such a special sport, and Rowland Hall’s Ultimate players continue to be perfect representatives of the sport: putting in amazing effort and always playing competitively, while also playing with the utmost respect and even friendliness with all other teams, and never forgetting to have a ton of fun all season long.

The team was led by our captains, Rodrigo Zendejas-Portugal (our MVP) and River Yeates (our Offensive Player of the Year), who displayed exceptional skill and dedication to the team, combining impressive throwing, admirable consistent hustle, knowledge of the game, and a knack for both educating and inspiring the team. Our spirit captain, George Jensen, was crucial in keeping players motivated and having fun, maintaining high energy, and facilitating positive interactions with opposing teams. We’re excited to see him and Rayne Weinstein (our Defensive Player of the Year) step up to lead the team next year as possibly the team’s only two seniors.

A whopping seven freshmen joined us this season, and every single one improved immensely, from having no prior experience playing on an Ultimate team. Having a large team made this the first year that Rowland Hall played 7v7 in league games, bringing a higher level of competition, which helped fuel the team’s impressive improvement. This was best demonstrated by their return to 5v5 at the state championship tournament, where they played the best Ultimate they had all season, culminating in going undefeated at day two of state to secure a 9th-place finish! During one of these final games at state, we were especially proud to see an all-freshman lineup successfully get a defensive stop and a score, a remarkable illustration of this team’s improvement this season and strong work and focus on the field.

We look forward to seeing all our freshmen and sophomores continue to create the strong foundation that Rowland Hall Ultimate will rely on over the next few years. Of course, as usual, our excitement for the future is also coupled with the bittersweetness of bidding farewell to our seniors. This year we’re losing five seniors. River Yeates, Rodrigo Zendejas-Portugal, Nyioe Younten, and Enzo Rust have been key players for Rowland Hall Ultimate for many years, some playing since the team’s first year of existence in 2023, and Oscar Hochman (our Most Improved Player of the Year) joined the team with no previous experience and still managed to become one of our most valuable cutters. They will all be missed, but we wish them the best and know that (should they choose to do so) they will continue to play excellent Ultimate in college and beyond.

We want to thank every single one of our players for their hard work and amazing spirit, and encourage them to keep it up over the summer. We look forward to building on this great season in 2027!
