The 2021 boys golf season is in the books. Rowland Hall had another great year, finishing first in Region 17 for the fourth consecutive season and second at the 2A State Tournament. Senior team captains Mercer Paradise and Danny Damico, as well as Zach Schwab, earned individual region titles over the past three seasons, and all three had strong golf careers at Rowland Hall.
Our team was a mix of young and old as, in addition to the three seniors mentioned earlier, the team consisted of juniors Carson Kawabata and Jack Vitek, sophomores Matt Siegal, Nate Kantor, and Kelton Ferriter, and ninth grader Jack Revoy.
Sophomore standout Matt Siegal led our varsity team throughout the season, with a scoring average of 74, and continued to do so at state, where he had a strong showing, finishing in fourth place. Teammates Mercer Paradise and Carson Kawabata had top-20 finishes in the state tournament as well, with teammates Danny Damico, Zach Schwab, and Kelton Ferriter rounding out the Winged Lion varsity team, which took home the state runner-up trophy behind a tough Beaver team.
End-of-season awards were presented to Matt Siegal, MVP; Mercer Paradise and Danny Damico, Captains’ Award; Kelton Ferriter, Most Improved; and Nate Kanter, Heart of the Lion Award.
We are also proud to announce that Mercer Paradise and Danny Damico were recognized with Academic All-Region honors and were named to the prestigious Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) Academic All-State team for 2A boys golf. Additionally, our team was awarded a plaque by the Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, as we posted the top team GPA (3.883) in 2A boys golf this year—an accomplishment we are very proud of!
With all the continued success by the Winged Lions this season, the future is looking bright. Assistant Coach Maxwell Sueoka and I are excited to see what lies ahead for Rowland Hall boys golf!
