Custom Class: post-landing-hero

By Colette Jepson-Smith, Head Coach

We started our soccer season on a warm summer morning in late July and ended on a crisp fall night in October. This year, we had a strong senior class whose leadership was key to our success. We finished with a 13-4 record, falling to RSL Academy (1-0); Morgan, a team that finished as the State 3A runner-up (4-2); and 4A Logan (4-2). An undefeated Region 17 season brought an amazing seventh consecutive region title, followed by a runner-up finish at state in a hard-fought heartbreaker, falling to Waterford, 4-3, in the waning moments of the match.

Highlights of the season included a win over 5A Springville and two region wins over Waterford. Both league matchups with archrival Waterford were exciting contests with a great competitive atmosphere. Our first meeting with the Ravens ended with a 2-1 victory in overtime. We saw them again at home, where we pulled off a dominant 5-2 win before a pack-the-bleachers rowdy crowd of Winged Lion fans at Steiner Field.

This team was challenged early on in our very competitive preseason schedule. They were led by an incredible group of seniors who took the time to make sure every underclassman was taken care of and felt part of the team—a team culture that carried onto the field as they played so well together, and with a unified mindset and goal. We want to thank all the administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and students who supported us during the season. The crowd at the state final was amazing—there were so many rooting for us, and we felt it during the regular season and saw it at Rio Tinto. Thank you!

Team members this year included Grace Baranko, Kaitlyn Bates, Halle Baughman, Mary Bocock, Elisabeth Bocock, Finley Bodeen, Lizzie Carlin, Madeline Carlin, Paige Connery, Summer Connery, Carolina Corcoran, Eliana DeBellis, Thea DeBellis, Dakota Erickson, Maile Fukushima, Julia Graham, Claire Hersh, Ruby Jeschke, Mei Mei Johnson, Kavitha Kasturi, Camryn Kennedy, Ming Lee, Ashlyn Lieberman, Beatrice Martin, Micha Nenbee, Kayla Norman, Quinn Orgain, Zakrie Smith, Madison Stark, Beatrix Wall, and Mackenzie White. A special shout-out to our departing seniors—Grace Baranko, Kaitlyn Bates, Mary Bocock, Summer Connery, Julia Graham, Camryn Kennedy, Micha Nenbee, and Lizzie Carlin—whose leadership by example was much appreciated and will be greatly missed.

Postseason team awards went to Camryn Kennedy, MVP; Lizzie Carlin, Leadership Award; Elizabeth Bocock, Most Improved; Maile Fukushima, Defensive MVP; and Summer Connery, Offensive MVP. Summer Connery, Camryn Kennedy, Maile Fukushima, Lizzie Carlin, and Micha Nenbee were recently named to the All-Region 17 team. (The Deseret News 2A All-State team has not yet been released.) Seniors Lizzie Carlin, Summer Connery, Kaitlyn Bates, and Grace Baranko earned Region 17 Academic All-Region honors as well as Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) Academic All-State recognition by virtue of their strong academic records. Congrats to all these players!

Coaches Annie Hawkins, Haylee Cacciacarne, and I want to thank the team for an incredible experience and amazing 2021 season!
