By Colette Jepson-Smith, Head Coach
We started our soccer season on a warm summer morning in late July and ended on a crisp fall afternoon in October! This year, we had big goals and plans to execute. We finished with a 13-5 record, and the coaching staff believes our difficult preseason schedule prepared us for an outstanding run in the state playoffs. The Region 17 season brought one loss and a runner-up finish, followed by a 2-1 win at the State 2A Championship!
A highlight of the season includes our two wins against Waterford. Both preseason and league match-ups with this archrival were exciting contests with a great competitive atmosphere. We then met them again in the state semifinal game, winning 3-1! We were ecstatic to be able to celebrate with so many students and faculty. The ultimate highlight was the state final, where we beat St. Joe 2-1 to win a state championship, the program’s fifth in the past six years!
This team was challenged early in our very competitive preseason schedule. They were led by an incredible group of seniors who took the time to make sure every underclassman was taken care of and felt part of the team, a team culture that carried onto the field as they played so well together, and with a unified mindset and goal. We want to thank all the administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and students who were able to support us during the season. The crowd at the state final was amazing—there were so many rooting for us, and we felt it during the regular season. Thank you!
Team members this year included Halle Baughman, Elisabeth Bocock, Finley Bodeen, Madeline Carlin, Paige Connery, Carolina Corcoran, Eliana DeBellis, Thea DeBellis, Dakota Erickson, Maile Fukushima, Julia Graham, Nessa Corbin, Sophia Hijjawi, Lili Honey, Claire Hersh, Ruby Jeschke, Mei Mei Johnson, Kavitha Kasturi, Camryn Kennedy, Ming Lee, Ashlyn Lieberman, Beatrice Martin, Quinn Orgain, Zakrie Smith, Beatrix Wall, and Mackenzie White. Maile Fukushima, Zakrie Smith, Beatrix Wall, and Elisabeth Bocock were recently named to the All-Region 17 team. The Deseret News’ 2A All-State team has not yet been released, and we hope to see several of our players on that roster. Seniors Elisabeth Bocock, Maddie Carlin, Maile Fukushima, and Ruby Jeschke earned Academic All-Region recognition. Maddie Carlin was also named to the prestigious Utah High School Activities Association Academic All-State team. Congrats to all these players!
