Health and Safety

A child’s sense of security is vital to their educational success.

At Rowland Hall, we take a holistic approach to providing a safe, healthy learning environment for all students, as well as the adults who support them. Our commitment focuses on student health and well-being, as well as campus security and ongoing faculty and staff training.

Student Health

Rowland Hall employs two full-time school nurses who help keep students healthy, supported, and in class. Our experienced nurses support the community in several areas, including:

  • Acting as a resource and trusted partner for families.
  • Assisting students by providing direct care for illness or injury, managing medication, and coordinating emergency response when needed.
  • Managing chronic health conditions by coordinating closely with families, faculty, and outside providers to develop healthcare plans.
  • Providing vision screenings to identify issues that may interfere with learning.
  • Maintaining student health records and immunization documentation.
  • Coordinating an annual flu vaccination clinic for the school community.

Student Well-Being

Research indicates that prioritizing student wellness and social-emotional learning are among the best ways to increase school safety. This work takes many forms at Rowland Hall, including:

  • Staying current with best practices for assessing and improving student well-being. This has led to changes like occasional late starts for grades 6–12 and increased teacher-student consultation time.
  • Cultivating close student-teacher relationships so every student feels known and valued.
  • Providing a student support team in each division to assist with academic or personal challenges.
  • Encouraging middle and upper schoolers to download the SafeUT app, which allows users to submit anonymous tips and access free, confidential crisis services.

Campus Security

Rowland Hall significantly invests in campus security, which includes:

  • Automatic locking doors and a paging system that allow us to quickly secure buildings in the event of an emergency.
  • A system for communicating with faculty, staff, and Upper School students via text message, email, and overhead paging.
  • Security cameras throughout our campuses.
  • A robust visitor policy that requires all visitors to campus to sign in and to wear either a visitor badge or a parent/caregiver name tag.

Training and Resources

Training our community in campus safety and emergency preparedness is a core part of creating a safe school environment. An active Safety Committee regularly reviews procedures and protocols on each campus. Additionally, we take the following measures:

  • We regularly conduct emergency drills based on standard response protocol (hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate, shelter) in all divisions, and periodically invite local law enforcement to observe.
  • All teachers complete CPR and first aid training, along with health training tailored to our student population and provided by our school nurses.
  • Administrators attend conferences and workshops dedicated to school safety.
  • We perform comprehensive campus safety reviews and seek advice from local and national safety consultants as needed.
