In Memoriam: Linda Hampton

Dear Students, Parents, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and Friends,

It is with heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Linda Hampton, administrative assistant to the Upper School principals and so much more to our entire community. It was just four short months ago that the entire faculty and staff celebrated Linda for her 30 years of service and friendship during our opening meetings. No one knew the Upper School and Lincoln Street Campus better. Linda worked for four principals during her tenure at Rowland Hall, providing invaluable assistance, advice, mentorship, and leading by example. Much of her work was behind the scenes, even on the weekends. Everyone benefited from her organization, attention to detail, bottomless effort, and love for Rowland Hall. In addition to working closely with principals and faculty, Linda oversaw all of our College Board AP testing, shepherding thousands of students through the process over the years. Linda also planned, organized, and managed the Baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies for generations of students, helping to create unforgettable memories for school families.

Linda was herself the mother of two Rowland Hall graduates. She spoke frequently and with great pride about her sons Zach ’00 and Jacob ’04, and she shared excellent parenting advice with her colleagues—especially those of us raising boys. She loved Rowland Hall students, attending arts performances for decades and assisting our volleyball team with score-keeping at every home game. She stayed in touch with many alumni who stopped by to visit when they were in town.

Linda was a great friend to all: truly the life of the party! From her centrally located workspace, she often regaled her colleagues with tales of Rowland Hall past and her own adventures while helping faculty, students, and others with problem-solving and tasks both large and small. She loved her Kansas City Chiefs and involved us all in her enthusiasm during football season, even running the Upper School Super Bowl score cards for years. Friendly visits to the office by any and all were frequent where Linda’s welcoming conversation and baked goods awaited! A steadfast friend with a huge heart, she supported many of us in our hours of need through life’s hardest moments.

Details for a memorial service are still being planned. In the meantime, you may wish to visit the blog Linda’s sons have been keeping for the past few months.
