- Head of School
Dear Parents, Guardians, Faculty, and Staff,
Happy first day of spring! As the days get longer and the weather warms up, it’s a natural time to think about change and what the future holds for us. Of course at Rowland Hall, we are always planning months—and sometimes years—in advance, both in anticipation of change and to ensure that our school continues to offer students an extraordinary learning experience.
As many of you are aware, our current Strategic Plan was approved in 2014. While these plans are often designed around a five-year cycle, our existing plan will span six years, reaching its conclusion in the spring of 2020. In order to ensure that the goals written five years ago remain in alignment with our progress and priorities as a school, our Board of Trustees last November made three amendments to the current Strategic Plan. They are as follows:
- We added a bullet point to the first goal of the plan—enhance the student learning experience—that prioritizes the integration of social-emotional learning (SEL) and cultural responsiveness to our academic and co-curricular programs.
- We updated the language of goal two, replacing “most outstanding” with “exceptional” so that it better represents our commitment to a growth mindset. Goal two now reads: Provide an exceptional math and science program.
- We added a bullet point to the third goal of the plan—develop the enrollment and business model for our future—that explicitly states our commitment to building a new Middle School and athletics complex on the Steiner Campus, bringing us one step closer to our vision of uniting the entire student body in one location.
These three changes reflect our desire to incorporate the latest research about teaching and learning into our existing goals, along with making certain our priorities are clearly stated and can serve as guideposts for the community through next spring, and beyond. It is particularly important to our Board of Trustees that we have a strong vision in place during the transition to a new head of school, and these updates are meant to reinforce not only the school we are, but the school we aspire to be.
I look forward to continuing to lead Rowland Hall for the next fifteen months as we work toward our shared goals. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
