The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 23rd at 8:30am in the McCarthey Campus Parlor. Remote access will be available for those who cannot join in person. RSVP today.
Active Allies
Active Allies is a meeting space for parents and caregivers who want to further their learning about differences and identify action steps to foster a more welcoming school environment for people of all races. This year, the group will focus on three big questions, the first of which is "How might I engage in meaningful conversations with those who are not like me?" The first meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 27th at 8:30am in the McCarthey Campus Parlor. Remote access will be available for those who cannot join in person. RSVP today.
Families of Students of Color Affinity Group
The families of students of color affinity group is open to any parents/caregivers of students of color (which includes multiracial, Asian, Black, Latine, Middle Eastern students, and more) enrolled at both McCarthey and Lincoln St. campuses. This space helps build connection and community and offers a venue to share questions and ideas for ongoing support. The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 10th at 3:15pm in the McCarthey Campus Parlor. Remote access will be available for those who cannot join in person. RSVP today.

During the month of September, 4th and 5th grade classrooms will be using Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) as one of the beginning-of-the-year student assessments in math and reading comprehension. This is an adaptive assessment that acts as one piece of data to help inform classroom instruction. Along with other assessment information throughout the year, MAP data helps teachers know where students are in their mastery of different content.
We will also assess the students in the spring, as MAP is focused on measuring growth from the year. Those spring results will be shared with families - stay tuned for more details in April.
If you are interested in learning more, here is an article written by NWEA on MAP.

Hello, Middle School Students & Families,
Communication between school and home about your child’s academic performance and their habits and attitude towards learning has always been an integral part of your child’s success. In the Middle School, Mission-Based Grading is our feedback system for reporting holistically on a student’s learning development. There are three categories: academic mastery, productivity, and contributions that target the skills, behaviors, and mindsets we hold for students. Please read more in the continuation of this letter here.
Upper School

This year, Beyond the Classroom is on Tuesday, September 10. Each grade will have a distinct program for the day, and ninth graders will embark on a four-day, three-night trip.
Ninth Grade: From September 10 - 13, 2024, the 9th grade class will be at Camp Mill Hollow in the Uinta Mountains. Students will be active in the outdoors, become a more closely-knit community, be challenged by a range of activities, and further develop confidence, leadership, and social skills. The trip provides an excellent opportunity for students to make new friends and explore the outdoors. The curriculum for the trip builds on place-based activities that the ninth grade teachers and advisors have developed and will lead. Please see the linked letter from Principal Gustavson for additional information: 8/29 e-mailed letter.
Tenth Grade: 10th graders will visit the Great Salt Lake with their 4th grade buddies and then create educational artifacts. Eleventh Grade: 11th graders will be working in research groups to better understand the importance of civic participation along with particular political issues related to the upcoming election. They will create an artifact and develop learning resources to be shared with the middle and upper school.
Twelfth Grade: 12th Grade will engage in a brand new Beyond the Classroom experience: "Love Your City." This day is all about exploring our city, connecting with classmates, and creating lasting memories as a senior class. From engaging in college counseling workshops to collaborating with Kindergarten students on a creative art project, students will spend the morning bonding and learning in new ways. The afternoon promises adventure with visits to iconic city spots, a delicious food truck lunch, and plenty of opportunities for fun and exploration. It’s a unique chance for our seniors to kick off their final year with enthusiasm, camaraderie, and a deeper appreciation for our community.
