Parents and Caregivers,
Please be aware that during Winter Sports students will have a slightly different schedule. Students eat lunch at 11:15 and begin boarding the buses between 11:30 -11:45. If you need to pick up your student early you will need to arrive by 11:15. Also, please refrain from parking along 800 South, in front of the school, during this time so that the buses can load in a timely manner.
In addition, please refrain from parking along 800 south before 3:00 PM for pickup so that buses can safely unload the students as well. Students participating in Skiing, Snowboarding, and Backcountry Skiing will return around 5 PM for pickup. Thank you for helping us keep Winter Sports running smoothly.
With Valentine's Day around the corner, we kindly request that all tokens of affection, friendship, and love be shared with friends and classmates off campus and outside of school hours. The Middle School values what Valentine's Day tries to achieve, however, we have found that the event frequently creates anxiety and exclusivity, taking away from the community we strive to be in the Middle School. We will continue to celebrate days that are more meaningful traditions at Rowland Hall like Halloween, Seasons of Light, and Candle & Carol. Thank you for helping us to support your children while at school.
Special Extended Day care for students in grades 1-8 will be offered on Tues - Thurs, Feb 21, 22, and 23, during the February break. Hello Middle School Dancers and Family!
Tech for our dance concert, SUBMERGE will begin a week from today on Monday, February 6th. Below you will find the most up-to-date information about the expectations for Middle School dancers during our tech week. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY, SOME DETAILS HAVE CHANGED SLIGHTLY.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY for all tech rehearsals and shows. Please send any questions or concerns as soon as possible.
Please note that on our show days (Feb 10 & 11) we are now calling 6 & 7th grade at 6:30 pm and 8th grade at 5:30 pm. The show will still begin at 7 pm. This change allows all the middle school dancers to be a part of our all-grades pre-show circle. It's a big tradition for the dance program and helps build comradery between our youngest and oldest dancers. It will make our Middle Schoolers feel more involved and they will get to meet our upper school companies.
Thank you all for staying tuned in and prepping for the concert! It's a busy, but very exciting and rewarding time for our dancers. We appreciate all the work our parents & caregivers do to make this week work!

Costumes, Make-up Hair, & Audienceship: You will get a grade for these.
Costumes: Students will keep all of their costumes at school and will be expected to show up each day with the skin colored undergarments needed to support all costumes as well as public changing spaces. If you have questions about what this means, please see me asap! Additionally, students should never wear dance clothes or costumes anywhere but in the dance space, dressing rooms, and onstage. Students will be graded each night on how they clean up their costumes and hang them up for the next night.
Make-up: The Larimer Center is pretty intimate and major make-up is not necessary. My suggestion is light eye make-up and lipstick for all dancers, but this remains a choice for all students.
Hair: Hair needs to be cut very short, or pulled cleanly and permanently away from the face for all of tech week rehearsals and performances. No exceptions. This includes male identifying students.
Audienceship: Students will be allowed to watch the show during spacing and tech rehearsals only. Beginning Dress Rehearsal night students will be expected to come in and out of the dance space in street clothes, stay backstage, and keep all costumes in dressing rooms only. Students will not be allowed in the audience unless they are apart of a dance that happens in front of the proscenium
NO FRIENDS OR FAMILY IN DRESSING SPACES OR BACKSTAGE AREAS BEFORE, DURING, OR AFTER THE SHOW! Parents can pick up kids in the Larimer Center seats or outside the dance doors when rehearsals or performances are over.
The Rowland Hall School’s SUBMERGE DANCE PROJECT is a direct response to the urgency and dire impacts of our evaporating namesake: Great Salt Lake and its parallels to our mounting global issues around human consumption and water crises on our shared planet. THE RH SUBMERGE DANCE PROJECT aims to bring awareness to our relationship with water in Utah’s arid desert while illuminating larger global conversations and solutions for sustainable water practices worldwide. The Dance Department, ages 11- through college alum, have contributed to this effort by partnering with non-profit, science-based institutions and government representatives in an attempt to respond to water, its utility, beauty, and power through artistic and public sharings. This dance concert will serve as a platform to communicate through dance, debate, and science, illuminating solutions as well as current philosophical mindsets that perpetuate the local and global water crises a new generation faces.

We will spend the days on campus doing a variety of games and activities. Sign your child(ren) up HERE for any or all of the three days. *Please note that due to staffing needs, we will operate on a minimum and maximum enrollment basis. If we do not reach the minimum, we may need to cancel and if we reach our maximum, we may need to limit enrollment. Monday, February 13, is the sign-up deadline. In the event that we need to cancel any of the February dates, we will notify you by Friday, February 17. Contact Robert Prestgard-Duke with questions.

We are proud of the hard work and commitment the Class of 2023 has brought to their college applications. While the process is far from over, our seniors have spent a significant amount of time considering which colleges might best help them pursue their individual goals and interests, and submitting strong and thoughtful applications to over 170 colleges and universities. As of February 1, 70 seniors (96% of the class) have reported hearing good news from the attached list of 72 colleges/universities.
As we look ahead to next year, we hope that you will remain part of our community. Our official re-enrollment period for the 2023–2024 school year begins today, February 3. This will help our admissions and leadership teams plan appropriately for next fall. The deadline for re-enrollment is February 17. If you have any questions about tuition or financial aid for next year, please reach out to Mary Anne Wetzel, director of financial aid.
