June 19th, or Juneteenth, is a federal holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX, to announce the end of the civil war and the effective end of slavery in the United States. Also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Black Independence Day, Juneteenth is a reminder of delayed freedom for many Black Americans and also an opportunity for everyone to identify ways to ensure the country continues to realize its founding principles of liberty and justice for all. This year's theme is Wave of Freedom, and there will be celebrations throughout the month.

Summer Reading
While we believe in the importance of play, we also know that middle school students need to continue to build their brains twelve months a year, not just during the school year. The more students read, the more their reading skills improve and their vocabulary grows. However, that is not the only benefit of reading. Reading has been shown to reduce stress, improve creativity, improve the brain’s flexibility and memory, and promote lifelong learning. Therefore, all students have grade level summer reading and assignments which are expected to be completed prior to the first day of school. Please read the grade level welcome letter which includes the assignment.
We have also put together a series of formal and informal resources for mathematics, critical thinking, logic, coding and more so students can keep their math muscles fit by engaging them in mathematical thinking and play whenever possible.
And, a reminder of the summer math camp Inspired by Jo Boaler and the youcubed team out of Stanford University. Here are additional details and how to register.
Parents and Caregivers,
If you have not collected your student's medications from the Grade 8 and Grade 6 trips please stop by the Middle School office between the hours of 9 – 3, Tuesday – Thursday to do so.
