Behind the Lens

Last week, I participated in the documentary filmmaking interim taught by Danny Schmidt and Matt Sincell. Upon arrival, we were split up into several groups with the task of creating a short documentary or any sort of movie within the timeframe. My team—Ronin, Will, Matteo, and Charlie—decided early on we wanted to create a mockumentary about being a car photographer. Although the journey was difficult, we had a fantastic time and learned several new things about the qualities of film. Overall, the interim was a priceless experience and I was able to create long lasting memories with my incredible group.

These photos were taken during our interviews with Matteo and Charlie. In the first, we interviewed Charlie in the bathroom to reflect his personality in the film as a funny, unorganized child who recently turned six years of age. We thought that by adding his character into the story, we could establish the fact that our film was intended to be a mockumentary and bring joy to the class. Charlie’s character also aimed to decrease the stern attitude in which we saw in Matteo's side of the film. The latter was shot during our interview of Matteo where he had such a good time laughing it up, we had to obscure Ronin’s facial expressions to ensure Matteo wouldn’t start cracking up during his speech (he did anyway).

In conclusion, our documentary filmmaking interim was an unforgettable experience filled with creativity, collaboration, and laughter. Through the process of making our mockumentary, we not only developed a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking but also forged strong bonds within our team. From filming in unexpected locations like a bathroom to managing uncontrollable laughter during interviews, every moment contributed to the unique story we told and the memories we made. It was a rewarding journey that showcased the power of teamwork and storytelling.
