The importance of balance

Being able to balance the life that you currently have with one that would be more sustainable is a lesson you must learn. In the interim Sustainability and Self Care, we had fun with friends but were also able to make sure that we could care for our own bodies and health as well. Along with this, we went over ways that we can help Rowland Hall become more sustainable to help the environment around us thrive. This year the interim was led by Laura Meyer, Tascha Knowlton, and Padmashree Rida, all science teachers who can teach you a lot, from making skincare products to making healthy and delicious food.

During this interim, one of the main things we learned was the importance of balance, having fun, and taking care of yourself while also caring about the environment around you. This topic was an essential lesson of this interim as it will help lead to you having a healthier body and mindset while also helping to create a healthier world.

In this interim, I learned that balancing being more sustainable and keeping yourself healthy is something that can be easily achieved with just a few changes. The sources Plastic Pollution Coalition and Sigma Test and Research Center say that the skincare industry is one of the largest polluters in our country. In this interim, we looked for natural and healthy ways to make skincare products. The food industry is also recognized as one of the largest polluters in the US. To learn how easy it is to make delicious and healthy food using reusable plates and cutlery, we went to a local garden where we learned how to pick vegetables and make spring rolls with them. We also made popsicles using reusable molds, delicious lemonade, and much more. With everything that we learned, we realized that it is really easy and fun to make delicious food and great skincare products at home while avoiding using plastics and dangerous chemicals that add to pollution.

There’s such a big emphasis we focused on during our interim which was fixing food, chemical, and plastic waste because of the effects they have on not only the world but also our mindset. In my experience in this interim, I learned how to appreciate nature because it is so valuable to our planet; however, it’s in danger. The source Positive Psychology states that studies have shown that taking a simple walk in nature helps improve mindfulness and helps you keep a healthy mindset. They also state that “this study strongly indicates the role nature plays in improving our general mental health conditions, including stress”; more information can be found in this link

Overall, in this interim, we learned that improving the health of the world can help you in many ways too, such as by keeping a healthy mindset and a healthy body. Being able to sacrifice a few extra minutes to create a more healthy meal or a natural scrub that doesn’t pollute the world allows for nature to heal, which in turn helps you reach a peaceful mindset.
