Disc-o Fever

“To put it simply, the sport combines some of the best aspects of soccer, basketball, and football to create the, no pun intended, ultimate sport,” says Eric Zhang, a student at NYU writing about what it's like to play ultimate frisbee. Ultimate frisbee is one of Rowland Hall's newest sports that started in 2006, and it is definitely growing more this year even has the largest number of students.

Ultimate frisbee has 16 participants this year. It started as just an after-school club/activity in 2006, and it has been a competitive sport At Rowland Hall since 2022. There has been so much growth, and there are actually some seniors who have been playing since they were freshmen in high school. Mr. Long, an English teacher here at Rowland Hall and the co-coach of the frisbee team, said, “they have become so good I don’t think that there is much more that I can teach them.”

The sport has a large impact on both the students and the coaches. For example, Mr. Long started playing with his friend and his wife, and after the first time he knew that he was hooked. He has played for about 30 years and he has enjoyed it with many friends. If he could play ultimate with anyone in the world, dead or alive, he said, “I had some friends that passed away this last summer that I would love to get one last game in with.” I think that this quote is so powerful to show how impactful the ultimate sport and community is to the players and the coaches.

The choice to play Ultimate can make a huge difference even after high school and throughout college. After playing throughout high school, most people have a higher chance of getting on the teams in college where it is much more of a niche sport. Because not a lot of people play this sport, they will definitely have a much higher chance of getting onto the team and maybe even playing professionally. In fact, this year there are a few players playing on teams outside of Rowland; A few of those students have played across America and abroad.

Overall, the Rowland Hall Ultimate team has a very positive and caring community. The seniors who have been playing the sport for quite a while have been very supportive to the freshmen as they have started to learn the rules and techniques of the sport. Even on the hardest practices, the senior players have helped the younger ones actually want to play and practice as hard as they need to. Overall the seniors have created a very strong foundation for the freshmen to start playing.
