Thanks for another great Beyond the Classroom!

Held on Monday, September 14, this year’s Beyond the Classroom day gave upper schoolers the chance to engage in grade-level activities. These experiences allow students to explore an aspect of their curriculum within the community, often while developing an appreciation for outdoor places, strengthening peer relationships, and experiencing joy with their advisors.

This year’s activities included:

  • Grade 9: Ninth graders visited Big Bend, a rich, 70-acre conservation site along the Jordan River Parkway that’s been designated as green space for the City of West Jordan. Students participated in a variety of activities, including a design thinking protocol to inspire park elements for city planners, team building, and planting.
  • Grade 10: Tenth and fourth graders traveled to the Great Salt Lake to conduct geological and biological science studies, which will support the fourth graders’ yearlong study of Utah and the Great Salt Lake. Tenth graders worked on design thinking protocol to help inspire their fourth-grade buddies, who are developing aquatic robots as part of their Great Salt Lake study.
  • Grade 11: Eleventh graders traveled to the Washakie Cemetery near Plymouth, Utah, to participate in conservation work with tribal conservation biologists from the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone and Sagebrush Collaborative. While there, the group also planted native species at the site to help reclaim the space for cultural heritage for the community and tribe.
  • Grade 12: Nearly four years after they created exhibit pitches for the Museum of Utah, seniors visited the new museum, which opened to the public this summer. They explored the space (including exhibit elements members of their class designed for that eighth-grade project), and participated in a design thinking workshop on finding personal purpose to inspire their work, engagement, and study.
